Family Dinners

Posted on 16:02 by cena
The other day, my dad invited us over for lunch.  Who would ever refuse a home cooked meal? Not me!

For our sides, he had sliced tomatoes.  I'm not sure where he got them, but they were perfect (red and juicy).

He also had greens.  They were Glory brand greens, but let's face it.  Glory greens are just good.

He also prepared some curly fries.

Now... on to the hit!  The ribs!  He smoked ribs.  They had that perfect pink smoke line, and they were juicy and fell off the bone.  I love ribs, and these were perfection.  Be jealous!

And to top it off, he made homemade ice cream.  Now you're probably even more jealous!  :)

It was great.

Skunx Chef Pub

Skunx Chef Pub
2158 Young Ave.
Memphis, Tennessee 38104

Skunx is a restaurant in Cooper Young that has been around for a few years. For some reason, I had never tried it.  Recently, I rectified that mistake.

They have a variety of beer. They serve pizza and have some meal specials.

We had a Memphis pizza.  It was topped with pulled pork and had barbecue sauce. It was delicious.

I would like to visit again and try their specials. They are open very late. It's a great late night dining option.  It's even open into the wee hours of the night.  It's a great place to hit up after the bar.

Owen Brennan's

Posted on 19:15 by cena
Owen Brennan's
6150 Poplar Ave
Memphis, TN 38119

For this month's fancy food group, we went to Owen Brennan's, which features more of a cajun cuisine.

There's some traditional New Orleans decor and colors.

The menu reminds you "to let the good times roll" or "laissez les bon temps rouler."

I once again went with a whiskey and diet coke.  I noticed that it wasn't cheap, but it was only $6.  It's not too shabby.  They have a nice sized bar.  It would be a nice place to go for a drink especially if you wanted to try something new.

They had nice complimentary bread.

While perusing the menu, we ordered the appetizer sampler.  I think it was $28.  It came with fried green tomatoes topped with crab meat, fried crawfish tails, and jumbo shrimp.  I loved the shrimp.  The tails were good, but it's hard to taste much meat when it's bite sized and fried.  The crab meat on top of the fried green tomatoes were also good.

I've never had turtle soup, so I went with that for my next course.  The flavor and the spice was good.  The actual turtle meat was ok.  I'm not 100% sure what it tastes like.  It seemed like a soft meat. The meat was flavored by the stew.

One friend had a roasted red pepper crab bisque.  This was my favorite soup of the evening.  It was very creamy and flavorful.

Another friend had the gumbo.  It was good.  We are going to New Orleans later this month.  It will be fun to taste the difference.

I had the red snapper perez. It was blackened red snapper topped with their crawfish étouffée.  It also came with a side of vegetables. Oddly, I forgot to take a picture of my food, yet I remembered to take a picture of everyone else's meal. Anyway, my food was average good.  It wasn't my favorite, though.

One of us ordered the shrimp creole. It was big shrimp in a tomato sauce topped with rice.  It was good, too.

The star of the night for me was the special.  The special was wild caught blackened salmon.  It was cooked great and had a flavorful sauce (red wine reduction) on it. It was topped on a bed of risotto.  I always get jealous of other's meals.

Another one of my favorites was the pasta jambalaya.  I never order pasta, but tasting this one would make me consider changing my mind.  It had a variety of meat and seafood in a delicious cream sauce.

One friend ordered a side of cajun cabbage.  It was full of andouille sausage.  I love plenty of meat in my sides!

I was too full for dessert, but I did taste the bread pudding.  I'm not a huge fan of bread pudding, but it was good.

I also tasted the baked apple napole.  It was a good apple pie.

For some cajun cuisine, it's one of the few in Memphis.  I think it's the only fancy restaurant that features food from New Orleans.  I would go there again.  They are known for their brunch.  I ate there a long time ago, but I don't remember it well enough.  I can't wait to compare the food to the food in Louisiana.

Brooklyn Bridge Italian Restaurant

Posted on 19:59 by cena
Brooklyn Bridge Italian Restaurant
1779 Kirby Parkway
Memphis, TN 38138

Recently, we were in East Memphis and needed some food, so we visited Brooklyn Bridge for some Italian food.

I decided to have a whiskey diet coke.

We were given complimentary bread with some olive oil and seasoning.  I love that kind of dip.

I ordered a half greek salad.  Mine was a typical greek salad.  It was a good portion for only $5.

Garrett's meal came with a house salad.  He ordered my favorite dressing there which is a blue cheese vinaigrette.

He ordered the special which was a salmon caprese.  A tomato caprese salad is my favorite salad.  It's tomato topped with mozzarella topped with balsamic.  This was a take on that.  It was a huge piece of salmon topped with tomato, mozzarella, and balsamic.

It also came with a side of pasta.  Garrett got the fettuccine.

I ordered a bunch of sides.  I had the spinach florentine.  It hit the spot.

I also got a side of manicotti.

Normally, I'm not tempted by dessert, but today was different.  I ordered the chocolate cannelloni.

Garrett had the tiramisu.

I enjoy Brooklyn Bridge.  It's a good Italian restaurant in Memphis.  Try it!  I recommend ordering sides and tasting a lot!

Cafe 1912

Posted on 14:32 by cena
Café 1912
243 S Cooper St
Memphis, TN 38104

Over the weekend, we decided to go out for a drink. Instead of our regular spots, we decided to go to Cafe 1912.  We have been several times, but it had been a while.  For some reason, we just don't think about.

They have a full bar.  They have a very good gimlet. They don't use Rose's sweetened lime juice.  They must make it in house.

I had a simple whiskey and diet coke.  It was good, and it was inexpensive.  Cafe 1912 is a nice restaurant, and the drink was only $5.

They gave us complimentary bread.  It was delicious.  I also got an appetizer of calamari.  It was very good, too.  I forgot to take a picture.

We just went for drinks, but they do have great food.

I had a great time, and I will keep it in mind next time!

Mollie Fontaine Lounge (Revisited)

Mollie Fontaine Lounge
679 Adams Ave
Memphis, TN 38105

I previously posted on Mollie Fontaine and the drinks and live music.  It is also owned by the same owner as Bar DKDC.

They have a funky decor.

Last time, I went was also on a Wednesday to hear Brennan Villines.

However, this time, I was hungry, so I ordered the mini steak frites.  It was a small steak cooked to perfection with the truffle fries.  Both were delicious.

I'm sure I'll return on a Wednesday.

Bayou Bar and Grill (Revisited)

Posted on 06:46 by cena
Bayou Bar and Grill
 2094 Madison Avenue
Memphis, TN 38104

This is my second Bayou post.  I had a new drink, the macmosa (champagne, orange juice, and vodka).  I definitely recommend it.  It's like a stronger mimosa.

This is probably my favorite meal there, the grouper salad.  I love the meatier fish, and I even got my veggies!  I get blue cheese on the side.  With so much fish and cheese, I don't need much dressing.  I don't want to lose any flavor of the meal.

What's your favorite meal at Bayou?
